In a related matter, Mr. Reynolds reported a generally positive reaction to the idea of joint planning between the town and the county for the area around Washington, but noted that the two planning commissions cannot exchange members. Town residents can serve on the county planning commission, but county residents are prohibited by law from serving on the town’s planning board.
County Administrator John McCarthy has suggested an ad hoc group made up of representatives from both planning commissions, the Board of Supervisors and the Town Council to meet perhaps quarterly to discuss issues of concern.
Mr. Morehouse suggested the idea be referred to the town planning commission for its reaction. He pointed out a possible conflict between the county’s comprehensive plan, which concentrates growth around the towns, and the town's desire to protect and preserve certain areas on its outskirts, including scenic vistas.
