To the editor:
The Bush administration’s proposal to extend $1 billion in credit (actually a gift from the American taxpayers) to the Soviet government is simply appalling. Isn’t this the same barbarous regime that was responsible for maiming and killing more than one million men, women and children in Afghanistan and still maintains control over that unfortunate land?
Is the Soviet Union a threat to the American national security? If it is, why are we propping it up? If it is not, why are we spending $300 billion yearly on defense? Did you know that if it were not for aid from the United States and the West, Communism would have collapsed years ago?
Aid to the Soviet Union keeps the Corrtmunist/socialist system afloat. It is this system that kept the people of the USSR at or near starvation for more than 70 years. All aid to the USSR goes to the government first and is used to maintain and strengthen its grip over its enslaved population.
According to Lenin the Communists would use socialism to conquer the world and their first victims were the peoples of the USSR. Why should the American people aid the Soviets and strengthen their brutal control over these unfortunate souls?
