This is not the first time Soviet leaders have claimed to be making fundamental changes in their system to give the West an excuse to send them more aid. Lenin did; Stalin did; Krushev did; they all did and now Gorbachev is pulling off the biggest fraud of all. As the largest western donor, the U.S. is simply providing misery for the Captive peoples within the USSR.
A Dec. 14, 1990 front-page article in the New York Times insists that the Soviet people don’t want our nation to help the Gorbachev regime. The article quotes a Soviet tractor operator saying, “You tell Americans, don’t give the communists a kopek. They’re bandits!”
Is it possible that U.S. aid to the Soviet Union continues because there are very important people in this country who want to be sure that the USSR does not collapse? Unfortunately the answer is a definite yes and members of a private organization, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), play a prominent role.
Aid to the USSR or any totalitarian system is morally wrong and politically suicidal. When you recall that the United States is saddled with a $300 billion annual deficit, you have to wonder why Mr. Bush proposes giving away money to anyone, especially the Soviets. Could it be his CFR connection?
