Francis Updike, Rappahannock Electric’s manager for marketing and public relations, called the storm “the worst since 1979” both in terms of the amount of damage and the time it took to repair it.
At one po?nt, Mr. Updike said, five of REC’s substations and one metering station were out of service. Customers from Charlottesville to Orlean were affected by the outages. Damage was particularly heavy in areas with a lot of pine trees, he said, including Castleton, Rock Mills and Slate Mills in Rappahannock County.
