SHARE program

The Rappahannock Extension Advisory Committee, along with local citizens, several ministers and the Rappahannock Extension Service have been investigating the possibility of organizing a Self-Help and Resource Exchange (SHARE) program and distribution center in Planning District 9.
If interested in the SHARE program, please join the organizers on Feb. 7, 7:00 p.m. at the Rappahannock County High School. A presentation on the opportunities for SHARE in PD9 will be made by Wayne Wilson, the director of SHARE for the D.C. Metropolitan area.
SHARE is an organization of people working together to help themselves, their friends, and their communities. Thousands of people participate monthly in the U.S. Anyone who wishes to stretch their food dollars may participate. In fact, the more people who participate, the better the program becomes.
Churches, community groups, civic organizations, schools, apartment complexes, and other groups may serve as the host organization. Host organizations make it possible for SHARE to be available in their communities. Host organization volunteers collect $13 in cash or food stamps, plus state tax for each unit of food ordered by the participant. A receipt is given which becomes a ticket to receive food on distribution day.
In addition, each participant is required to do twp hours of community service work each month for each unit of food ordered. The host organization coordinates and assures that oommunity service work is done. Participants must abide by this rule unless clearly physically unable and may not register again until this requirement
fulfilled. >
One of the most important kinds of community service is bagging food at the warehouse. SHARE is able to provide 25-40 lbs. of fresh, wholesome food at such a bargain because SHARE'buys in bulk.
