The gymnasium and cafeteria at Rappahannock County Elementary School are both getting new roofs this week at a price tag county taxpayers will gladly pay: $0.00.

Owens-Coming Inc. recently authorized more than $15,000 in repairs, including materials and labor, under the 10-year warranty for the roof, which was installed in 1985. According to Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell, the roofs manufacturer also authorized up to five days of patch repairs on the remainder of the RCES roof.

The flat roof is constructed of sheets of a fiberglass membrane laid over top of an asphalt-base sealer. The membrane, which is laid in strips, is then sealed along its seams to create a waterproof surface. The existing roof, Mr. Chappell explained, had developed cracks
