soils. At the same time it was threatened by a hardy pest, the boll weevil. Many jobs were at stake with the yearly cotton crop. Millions of people were dependent upon this one commodity. If the crop was bad, or the selling price low, people went hungry.
Dr. Carver tried to improve people’s lives by reducing this dependency on cotton. He began looking for other crops that farmers could grow in rotation with cotton. Other crops were needed to break up the pest cycles, and hopefully add nutrients back into the soil. These alternative crops also needed to be profitable, with a stable market.
Dr. Carver’s research team produced the introduction of sweet potatoes, peanuts and soybeans as alternative crops. He found they were suitable for the climate, and farmers could readily grow them. He worked hard to find uses for these crops in order to keep demand strong and prices stable.
