For many years, March has brought a familiar sight to Rappahannock County — the brightly colored Mobile Sight and Hearing Screening Van operated by the Lions Clubs of Virginia.
The unit provides free vision and hearing tests to all the children in the county’s schools, and has equipment to do glaucoma and diabetes testing as well as eye and ear tests for adults. All the testing is free.
It is equipped with a soundproof booth for hearing testing, the latest vision-testing equipment and diagnostic equipment for non-contact glaucoma testing and diabetes screening. The latter two tests are available only for adults, the Lions emphasized.
The van will be at Wakefield School in Huntly on Tuesday, March 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. for student testing only.
On Wednesday, March 6, the operation will move to Rappahannock County High School, where students will be screened from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and adult screening will be done from 2-3 p.m.
This year, the van will spend two days at Rappahannock County Elementary School. On Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, students only will be screened from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days. There will be no adult testing on March 5, 7 or 8.
