Mr. Coon’s principal composition, entitled “Rappahannock Variations” is in six or more movements, suggestive of many aspects of the county: the woods, streams and other natural features. Some of the pieces convey a sense of the simplicity and leisurely pace of rural life; others, the vigorous work that farming entails. Once I thought of how time passes and death comes, as the seasons progress, but was reminded too that life is eventually renewed.

The variety and individuality of the songs made the work an admirable achievement, expressing happiness and optimism in this bleak time when these sentiments can be especially appreciated. The music was played on a synthesizer which has the capacity to produce music especially difficult to play on conventional instruments as well as some music that it only can produce.
