The Library Board of Trustees struggled with setting a budget for the coming year and setting a date to have the new library open at its meeting last week.
Treasurer Helen Platt explained the budget question by saying that she had been unable to get estimates for the cost of insurance or the cost of fuel oil for the new building.
The current library building is heated and cooled by electricity. The new library will have oil heat with an electric forced air system for the heat and central air-conditioning.
The current budget has $1,500 for ele tricity, but board members were not sure what to put in for next year for electricity or fuel oil. Finally they made a guess of $3,000 for both.
This year’s insurance premium is $1,010. It providet^overage for the building for $200,000 and $30,000 for the book collection. The board decided the new policy will need to cover the building for about $550,000.
The proposed budget also calls for increasing the librarian's salary from $19,420 to $20,000 and also for a salary increase for the part-time assistant librarian.
“I know it sounds bad to ask for an increase when everyone else is cutting, but our salaries are way below anybody else,” Chairman William Young said.
The budget also calls for increases for custodial and lawn care because of the larger building and nearly two acres of grounds. There is also an increase for postage and for telephone service. The library had to install a new telephone line for the fax machine given by the state that is costing $20 per month.
