The county’s zoning ordinance has a height limitation of 35 feet in most zoning districts but exempts chimneys, spires, cupolas, bams and silos among others. The top of the steeple will be about 58 feet high. Mr. Fletcher asked the planners to decide if a steeple is a spire.
Hampton District representative John Clark Jr. said he had looked up “spire” in the dictionary and found it defined as a “long tapered structure such as a steeple.”
County Administrator John McCarthy said that although the steeple is exempt from the height requirement, the planners could consider its “impact.”
