As this is written, Sunday evening, Feb. 24, coalition forces are attacking Iraqi troops on the ground in and near Kuwait.
Most Americans, indeed most of the world’s people, hoped an attack would not be necessary, that Saddam Hussein would see how wrong his decisions, how hopeless his position, and how overwhelming the world’s revulsion.
Recalling the cruel, evil and illegal actions carried out since last August at Saddam Hussein’s direction makes the world’s reaction logical, proper and reasonable:
• the unprovoked aggression leading to Kuwait’s capture;
• Iraq’s subsequent mistreatment of Kuwait’s citizens, murder, pillage, rape, widely reported in the world’s press;
• Iraq’s mistreatment and public flaunting of coalition POWs, seen worldwide on TV;
• the deliberate giant oil spill into the Persian Gulf, seriously damaging the region’s ecology, bringing little if any military advantage to Iraq;
• setting fire to an estimated 300 wells and other oil installations to date, adding major airborne pollution and destroying an irreplacible, increasingly scarce natural resource; and,
