The valedictorian was John Viega of Winchester, who spoke of standing on the threshold that he and his classmates had been waiting a long time to cross. Mr. Viega also praised the social advantages given to him at Wakefield. He said that his class was so small that he had had to learn to get along many different types of people and that he would be leaving the school having learned tolerance and how to co-exist with varying beliefs.
Academic honors and awards were presented to several Rappahannock County students.
In the lower school:
• The Wakefield all-around girl award to Mary Beth Williams.
• The Wakefield all-around boy award and the dramatics award to Luke Zindel.
• The geography award and the Spanish award to Welby Lynn.
• The Molly Fraser Prize for French to Van deBergh.
• The art award to Sarah Yates.
• The music award to Meghan' Fairbrother.
In the prep school, the following Rappahannock students were awarded prizes and honors:
• Good manners award to Alison Martin.
