The farm sells 70 shares. In the second year of CSA at Jordan River, the shares sold out.
“Last year this time, we were still taking shareholders,” head gardener Deena Davis said, swinging her arm wide to include the vast expanse of gardens.
Working 10- to 15-hour days during production months, Ms. Davis and two apprentices, Gina Russo and John Ehrlich, maintain the acres of produce, pick every week and drive the vans full of produce to shareholders in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
Only 10 shareholders are local and visit the farm weekly to receive their goods.
“We are always looking at local expansion,” Mrs. Harris said.
Row upon row of raised bed garden spaces carve the three to four acres of vegetables into neat and precise garden plots. Mulched with old hay and other forms of mulch, the 3-by-25-foot beds are separated enough for a walking path to other beds, utilizing each peck of soil to maximum capacity.
