it may be too early to hand out congratulations tor the county budget as it is still pending final approval. But we can say that County Administrator John McCarthy anticipated the state’s dramatic cuts and was in contact with department heads early in the process. His realistic approach made planning for the coming year go, all things considered, smoothly.

Mr. McCarthy, by the way, has asked the Washington Town Council to purchase a personal computer for him to work on at home in lieu of compensation for town work he has done for them. We hope they approve his request.

There are about 150 jurisdictions in the state that would love to have tackled the budget crunch with as much success as we have here. With probably the lowest personal property tax rate between here and the Atlantic Ocean, and with the best public schools in the state, Rappahannock has truly pulled off a coup this year.
