However, he also showed the board members graphs from testing sixth graders in math. For the past three years math scores have been more than three standard deviations above the average for the period of the tests. Sixth graders have been taught math in the computer lab for those three years, Dr. Gangel pointed out. In previous years the average score for sixth graders had been 51.5 percent. For the past three years it has been 70. ;
“I’m not saying that computers are the total answer, but they are part of the answer,” he said.
“If you are looking for a big change in the scores, you have to look to a large change in the system,” he added.
Dr. Gangel also had results of the literacy passport tests to show the board. This year 69 percent of the sixth graders passed all three tests, compared to 59 percent last year. Of those who took the reading test, 83.5 percent passed compared to 83.3 percent last year. For writing 81.8 percent passed this year, compared to 76.7 percent last year, and for math 91.3 percent passed this year, compared to 78 percent last year.
Also a number of seventh graders had to retake one or more of these tests this year becuase they did not pass last year.
Two teachers
appointed
Last week the School Board appointed Doretha Butler and Cary Craig to teaching positions at Rappahannock Elementary.
The board will be interviewing candidates for the position of assistant principal/athletic director at the high school this Thursday evening and expects to be able to make that appointment following the interviews.
That would leave only two positions to be filled for next year. The school system is still looking for a part-time speech therapist and a part-time school psychologist.
