“Your generation can become the we generation,” he told the graduates. “You have the opportunity to put selfishness down and strive together in noble causes. Put aside the barriers to working together,” he urged.
He ended his speech by having graduates Julianna Volkmar and Edna Shanks join him in singing “We Are the World.”
Superintendent David Gangel told the graduates, “Change will mark the rest of your lives.”
He said one-third of the 1970 list of Fortune 500 companies have vanished. “You can be blinded by the light of change, or you can be the light for others to follow. This is your choice,” he said.
Earlier School Board Chairman Beverly Massie compared the process of education to the farming season. “We are proud of today’s harvest,” she said. “Remember the soil from which you came.”
Salutitorian Michelle Raynor said the graduates would always remember June 15, 1991 and such high school experiences as disecting a fetal pig in biology and running a mile in physical education that led to graduation.
