The school garden was the setting for Wakefield School’s 12th commencement on Saturday evening. The Hon. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest delivered the keynote address.
Mr. Guest addressed the seniors, saying that they were the future and that they had been well-prepared at Wakefield. He urged the students to enjoy the pursuit of success but to always ask themselves if there is something more that they can do for themselves, their family, or their country.
The salutatorian was Jamed Stephens of Front Royal, who will be attending the United States Military Academy at West Point next year.
Mr. Stephens spoke of life’s cycles and noted that he and his classmates were presently standing on one of the peaks, to be followed inevitably by a descent as they enter college in the fall. Mr. Stephens summed it up with a phrase remembered from his years of studying Latin, “carpe diem,” or seize the day.
