Dr. King’s Birthday observed
A program commemorating the birthday of civil rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place at The Theatre at Washington, Va. at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18.
Local resident E. Franklin Warner will discuss the life and teachings of Dr. King and will conclude with the recitation of the memorable "I Havea Dream” speech.
Mr. Warner is a former civil rights leader who participated in the planning and preparation of the 1963 "March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom” and was an associate of Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) involved in various other civil rights, voting rights, and fair housing activities, including the Poor People's Campaign (Resurrection City) following Dr. King's death in 1968.
Several local youths will share their visions for the future. Local gospel groups will perform.

The following businesses and county offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 20 in observance of Jackson-King Day:
The county government offices and area post offices, the Rappahannock National Bank in Washington and the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Flint Hill, Rappahannock Social Services, the Rappahannock Library and the Rappahannock Health Department. Family Guidance Services of Rappahannock will * also be closed, but in case of an emergency, clinic staff may be reached by calling 675-3329.
