To the Editor
Having attended the recent School Board meeting on proposed expansion plans, I looked forward to last week’s paper to see how the meeting was reported. 1 was somewhat disappointed to find my own statements represented in such a manner as to give the appearance that I have approximately the same I.Q. level as a cucumber and so I would like to present a slightly more coherent version of what I had to say at the meeting.
The presentation that evening was intended to show how the School Board was preparing to deal with soon-to-be-needed expansion of our school system. Their recommendation at this time is to build a new middle school and also a vocational school to serve students currently being bused to Piedmont. The points I raised were as follows:
• We have seen many years of declining school enrollment and only one year of an increase. Do we need to become alarmed at this increase now or could we wait another year or two to see if the increase is a continuing trend or just a one time ■pike?
• Have any of the other options concerning expansion been looked into in depth? Expansion of the existing schools was mentioned but no figures were given. Before we take such a big step the least we should do is thoroughly consider all options available to us.
