As late as 1948, he said, television was “an observer, not a participant” at the conventions.

The year 1952 resulted in “a sea change in political TV,” Mr. Scherer said. “The Eisenhower people welcomed TV, while Taft did not. That was instrumental in getting Ike the nomination.” He added that 1952 was the first year for political ads on TV. He described the process used in making ads for Eisenhower.
