Ross Perot, Mr. Scherer said, is “the creation of TV.” He noted that Mr. Perot and the other candidates are using talk shows as a way to reach voters. “It avoids the high cost of TV time, and there is a built in audience,” he said. He noted that the format of having questions called in to the programs results in some “soft questions with no follow up.”
He summarized, “TV has changed the political landscape; the parties have atrophied and the conventions have become dinosaurs. Talk shows are in, and the press was not prepared for this end run around conventional joui ..alism.”
