organizing and running a large scale drug operation would face a minimum of 20 years in prison, maximum of life in prison, and a $1 million fine.
• Another new law makes it a crime to be in possession of a police radio, including a scanner to monitor police radios, while committing a crime.
In addition to the new crimes, the General Assembly passed several bills strengthening existing laws, especially for juveniles and drunk drivers.
Several laws allow the state to suspend the driver’s license for kids under 18 who are caught with drugs or who use a fake identification card to buy or use alcohol or who are caught drunk in public.
The penalty for anyone who kills someone while driving drunk was stiffened by adding the charge of “reckless disregard for human life,” which carries a penalty of one to 20 years in jail.
Other laws passed by the General Assembly this year include:
• A new law requiring people who fish in the Chesapeake Bay or Atlantic Ocean to buy a recreational saltwater fishing license. The $7.60 license fee can be avoided by fans of charter boats if the charter boat captain pays an annual fee. Money raised by the license charge is aimed at studies of and projects to replenish game fish in the bay and ocean.
• Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) stores may now be open on all legal holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. In return, however, shoppers must
