I recall one press conference where a provincial reporter from a Southside weekly asked something like, “Governor, what have you done for Brunswick County lately?” and Godwin replied tartly, “Well, what was I supposed to do for it?”
As recently as the mid-1970s I was standing with Mel Carico, then the dean of the Capitol press corps, and watching a parade of post-Watergate young reporters interviewing passing members of the General Assembly. At this point Carico said in his southwest coal country twang, “The trouble with this place is we ain’t got enough crooks to go around for all the investigative reporters.”
But these days the media is more aggressive than in bygone times and has a lot more titillating subjects to write about - much more than old timers like myself could possibly
