Two years ago, the Park Service compiled research in an effort to show that acid rain is having an adverse impact on the park, as defined by federal legislation regulating polluters. Under the law, companies that put out a certain amount of pollution are required to obtain pemits if they want to add to their energygenerating capacity.
The law also alldws the Park Service the opportunity to comment! on the impact the permit would have on the park, which the service is mandated by other federal4aws to protect.
This research shows that a majority of the pollution is coming from; the west, from some of the most heavily industrialized areas in the country: West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley. One major hurdle the service faces is that it has no means by which to regulate contaminants coming from out of state.
Both the service and the Environmental Protection Agency are looking at ways to solve the problem, but no result is expected for several years. In the meantime, Wade says, the service is taking a hard line on new pollution from
