The Board of Supervisors approved the $7.8 million fiscal 1993 budget at a special meeting last Wednesday night on a vote of four to one.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie voted against the budget saying it contained some things that were “wanted but not needed.” Specifically he said he disagreed with having the county pick up the employees’ cost of the state’s retirement system and with purchasing a new computer for County Administrator John McCarthy’s office.
Mr. Massie said the county was picking up the retirement, at least in part, because the employees hadn’t received raises. “We make it easy for him (Gov. Douglas Wilder) to say ’no,”’ Mr. Massie said. “He can be written up as the governor who ballenced the budget without raising taxes. As long as we say ‘yes,’ he can say ‘no.’”
