Responding to questions, Wade said that the Matthew’s Arm Campground, which will be closed all year to save money, represents about 23 percent of the camping spaces at the park.
Another cost-cutting measure the park will take this summer, Wade said, is to give the administrative load for Big Meadows campground over to the consessionaire. “He has raised the camping fee $2 a night per space to cover the added cost,” he said.
A major item on the agenda was a discussion of the ongoing Related Land Study. This is a resource study of the land adjoining the park and near it on both sides of the mountain. The study has been completed for Rockingham and Albemarle counties and the park is planning two open houses, one in Rockingham County on Feb. 6 and the other in Crozet on Feb. 13, to display the maps and solicit comments.
The purpose is to identify those lands that might be suitable for inclusion in the park and those that are not suitable because of development.
“We are dealing with dynamic data. We intended all along to make this an ongoing project subject to change. Nothing will be written in stone,"Wade said.
Sandy Rives, the park’s public information officer, told the crowd that the maps being developed show the resources in the area, including soil types and related data. “It is the kind of data counties use when they are working on comprehensive plans,” he said. “These are not about actions that the park service may
