I have been carrying a lot of guilt around lately. It was all brought about by the recent presidential campaign. ,

I had previously felt I had rid myself of perpetual guilt by going broke several years ago. Forced back upon myself, I had sought counseling as part of my poverty recovery.

After relating my guilt to the counselor, and having paid a substantial fee, I was assured that I was a good and decent person. I was not convinced at first but she (the Counselor) explained how' much money phase if would cost.

I then and there became a believer in my goodness and my sanity. In short, I did not have the money.

This new onslaught of guilt was that I related to Presidentelect Clinton in his avoidance of the draft and going to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Now hear this combat avoiding story.

On Dec. 8, 1941, I enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. I was 19 years old and flunking every subject my first semester in college.

It seemed to me that the war would be over before anyone would get to shoot at me. I was written up in the year book as an authenticated hero off to save the world from the facist dogs.

By July the 1st of that year my enthusiasm for' combat was waning even though I was a sharpshooter and a tough Marine. The newspaper stories about Japanese killing a lot of Marines were telling on me.

My daddy had some political clout back home so I suddenly felt an urge to become an Officer and a Gentleman by going to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

I asked daddy to call the Senator and see about this new opportunity to serve my country. I was lucky. Orders arrived on July 8, 1942, detailing Pvt. Day to the Naval Academy Prep School in Norfolk, Virginia.

Everyone else in that group went to Guadalcanal where most of them were wounded or killed. I never again failed an academic test.
