The criteria used to measure land are the same ones used when the park was created, he said. He added that the park does not always agree to accept parcels of land that are offered to the park. , *
Wade offered as an example one parcel south of Criglersville that lies between the park and a Wildlife Management Area. Although hg agreed to accept the parcel if offered to the park, Wade suggested to the conservation groupworking on the deal that the parcel was more suitable for inclusion in the WMA. ' *
These areas are managed by the State’s Game and Fisheries Commission for public hunting. Wade favors such areas on the edges of the park to help control the deer and bear herds. * <
“I can tell you that legitimate hunting seasons are an appropriate way and desireable way to help corvtrol populations of bear and deer,” he said. *
Responding to a question about bears, Wade said the park’s heap herd is stable at about 600. Although gypsy moths have severely reduced the acorn crop in certain areas oj the park, the bears seem to be coping rather than leaving the park for local apple orchids,he said.
Rappahannock Game Warden James Bankston reported this week that more than two dozen bear$ were trapped this summer and fall in the county and moved away from the area. I
