Businessman Earle C. Williams, one of . three candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor, sets himself apart from rivals by emphasizing that he has the business experience to encourage economic growth.
In an interview with editors of the Times newspapers last Friday, Williams criticized the administration of Gov. L. Douglas Wilder for failing to promote economic development throughout the state.
“We’ve been soft-pickings for everyone,” said Williams, referring to the flight of , businesses from Virginia to other states. / “This governor doesn’t have a clue about business. It’s madness.”
Williams linked Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, the likely Democratic gubernatorial candidate, to the Wilder administration and portrayed Wilder and his economic advisers as inept and passive about recruiting and keeping businesses in Virginia.
The state Economic Development Authority, Williams said, focuses more on tourism than on economic development. “You can’t build an economy on tourism,” he said. “That’s third world.”
He cited, for example, the experience of a European pharmaceutical firm that was prepared to build a plant in Virginia but chose to move to South Carolina after a meeting with Wilder.
