Wade urged the restive crowd to understand that the NPS has a mandate “to protect the resources for future generations and make them, available to visitors. Referring to the demand from surrounding communities that portions of the Skyline Drive not be closed from December through May, Wade said, “when managemenmt favors short term local interests rather than long term national interests, then there is some danger to the parks.”
“We may have to consider in the future short term closing or whatever to maintain the long term interests for the National Park Service. If we continue to make decisions based on the short term (three to five year basis) we are not doing our grandchildren a favor at all,” he said.
