Jon Purnell Has lived through some interesting times as a representative from the U.S. State Department to the Soviet Union and Russia, and he shared his impressions with a full crowd at the library Friday night.
Mr. Pumell was in the U.S.S.R. from 1982 to 1984 stationed in Moscow and from 1989 to 1992 in St Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad when he arrived.
He showed slides from both tours, saying they conveyed a sense of what has been happening for the past seven years. Early slides showed banners honoring Lenin and Leonid Breznev. Of Brezhnev he said, “This individual personified stagnation. He represented the dead end of the Soviet system.”
