“The board doesn’t have any business people from the technology sector,” Williams said. “It’s crazy.”
Williams said one way to expand Virginia’s economy would be to reorganize state government itself. Several departments such as the Virginia Department of Transportation could be revamped, and certain state services could be contracted out to the private sector, he said.
“We have to reform government,” Williams said. “We also need to make some changes in people’s perceptions that they don’t "have an interest in government.”
Aside from business and the economy, Williams also fielded questions on abortion and gun control.
“I’ve been concerned about abortion for years,” Williams said. “I don’t like the idea that it should be used for sex-selection and birth control,” he said,
Williams said he would not support efforts to restrict abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy, but he opposes federal funding for abortions, except in cases of rape or where the life of the mother is at risk. He said he Supports parental notification, a 24-hour waiting period and informed consent.
“My position puts me at odds with the take-no-prisoners”—the extremists— “on both sides of the issue,” he said.
