The letter to the supervisors also will state that the board believes keeping good teachers is more important than buildings, and the board feels it will be necessary to give teachers raises to keep good ones. The School Board does not want the county to invest in a middle school at the expense of compensating teachers.
At the beginning of the discussion members Paul Nichold from Wakefield District and John Tole from Stonewall-Hawthom District supported the middle school. Members Bryant Lee from Hampton District, Frances Thornton from Piedmont District and Beverly Massie from Jackson District expressed reservations.
The board members said they had not received many comments from citizens 'about the expansion alternatives. Mr. Nichols and Dr. Tole $aid the few people they had talked to supported the middle school. Dr. Tole added that he thought building a middle school would save money in the long run because building one in 10 years would cost twice as much.
Mr. Lee said, “The biggest concern I get is the taxes. A lot feel ihey are already too high. They don’t want to see them jump too much.” He estimated building a middle school would add 11 cents to the tax rate.
Mrs. Thornton said most of the people she had talked to preferred the additions. She expressed concern about the cost of acquiring the land.”
Mrs. Massie said, “I had to solicit input. I thought people would call, and it was not that way.” She said the people she talked to split between those who were primarily concerned with what is “educatiohally best” and those most concerned with the cost.
Mrs. Massie said some people don’t expect much growth in the county. She said that people expect an increase in gasoline taxes and think people may move back closer to their jobs to save on the cost of commuting.
She said her main concern was time. She said she thought a middle school would not be approved without a referrendum, and it would take four years *to get the school built.
