Daughan of the Luray architectural firm Baughan and Baukages appeared before the board to present the bids. “The good news is that we received 11 bids - the most I ever remember receiving for a job,” Daughan said. “The bad news is that all the bids were well over our projected cost of $100,000.” The low bidder was Daughan Construction Company, a firm owned by the architect’s brother in Luray. Their bid was $138,871, followed by bids of $143,771 and $146,637. The architect said that the number of bids and the range they covered indicated that the builders’ cost estimates were fair and realist. He offered the board several changes in the originalplans that would reduce the building cost. After a brief discussion of the changes, the board voted to accept the low bid.
Mrs. Brenda Jett French of Manassas has been selected as_ “Outstanding Young Woman of America” for 1982. The award, recognizes young women who give their time, talents and service to enrich the quality of American Life. Mrs. French was selected from thousands of nominations "submitted by business and civic leaders throughout the country. Mrs. French is a graduate of Rappahannock County High School. She received her Bachelors of Art in Education from Virginia State University, Petersburg and her Masters of Education from George Mason University, Fairfax.
A Rappahannock artist was awarded special plaudit? by the dance reviewer for the Washington Post in a review of the year’s dance highlights. Sally Nash, director of the county’s modern dance troupe, The Last Minute Wood Company, was singled out for “impressive creative contributions.”
