We had eight All American Footballers, Notre Dame had one, but we got him the next year. . A great .number .of these people were doing what I was doing. I was not saving the world for democracy, I was saving my skin! And I would do it again.
I stayed in the service untiM got through the Korean Campaign which eased my conscience. I heard a few rounds fired although they were not filled at me. Many of my classmates went on to distinguished military careers; one became President.
Some may not even have had my motives. But every one of them was glad he was not on some remote Pacific Beach being exposed to enemy fire.
What really inspired this confession is that I attend class functions occasionally. We had one the day after the election.
* Most (probably 85 percent) of these guys are rabid republicans and they were in deep depression regarding the future of the country. They were mumbling things like: “This country is in grave danger. The Commander in Chief is a draft dodger who chose to take advantage of a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University than to have gone to Viet Nam." I would ask them what would they have done, but I know, because I know what they did. I would say the same*of any person out there who makes noise about the draft dodger: they would have done the same under the same circumstances.
I hope that no one will attack me for this admission. I promise I will not run for any office above that of County Supervisor.
