The sheriff contacted local emergency services coordinator Dieter Kneupfer and together they visited the site.
Col. Kneupfer contacted Steve Patrick, the Culpeper regional field representative from the state Department of Emergency Services (DES), and notified him about the unknown barrels. DES provides assistance in hazardous materials incidents to local governments and their emergency services coordinators.
The State Water Control Board and the Environmental Protection Agency were also notified. The State Police were called in to investigate, but nothing seemed to happen, Mr. Laimbeer said.
The barrels remained. Col. Kneupfer said last August the State Water Control Board, the EPA, the Department of Emergency Services and the State Police were again on the case.
