Four of the tiny mares are already in residence and due to foal in early June. The rest of their herd of about 40 will be arriving later. Currently the Hoffmans are building a loafing shed in a pasture and planning for a large bam with indoor arena for training later.
Miniature horses, which cannot be taller than 34 inches at the point on the back where the mane ends, have been developed from a variety of breeds of horses and ponies, she explained.
The Hoffmans raise their miniatures for show and sale. They sell to other breeders but also to people who ride themselves and want fheir children to be comfortable around horses. The children find the tiny horses much less frightening than larger horses or ponies.
