The annual fund-raising social for the Boy Scouts was hosted by Marion and Bill Sharp of Red Fox Hill, Amissville, on April 24 at their home.
Scouting supporters throughout Rappahannock County attended and made their contributions to the Friends of Scouting Campaign. Others who were unable to attend, sent their contributions to Marion and Bill anyway.
The Friends of Scouting Campaign is the major source of support for the Shenandoah Area Council, which is made up of nine counties in Virginia and West Virginia.
The money raised provides revenue to operate the Scout’s Council-owned camp, Camp Rock Enon in Gore, Virginia, and the Scout Service Center in Winchester. The campaign also pays for training materials for adult volunteers and salaries for full time Scout employees. There is approximately one paid employee for every 1,000 youths, or one employee for every 300 volunteer adults.
Scholarship funds are available to ensure that every young person who wants to join a Scouting program is able to do so without regard to ability to pay. These funds cover registration fees, uniform items, camp fees and sometimes cover costs of attending events such as the National Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia.and the Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimmarron, New Mexico.
