Surveying the scene — the blue lights, the flares on the road — the passenger in pickup truck leaned out the window. “What’s going on up there?” He seemed crestfallen to .hear that it wasn’t a wreck.

A woman and a small child walked towards a car. “You might as well turn it off,” she said. “Everything’ s stopped for a bike race. ”

Keith Arnold of Arlington, “my sister Linda and my fiance Cathy” had watched the Tour’s noontime start in Front Royal, then leapfrogged ahead of the pack to watch the sprint through Sperryville. “We’re all cyclists,” he said. “It’s fun to watch, and we try to see races like these whenever they come through the area.”

Question from the crowd: “Is there a sprint line around here someplace?” “Yeah, it’s right down there, about 200 meters . . . see the purple sign?’ “Oh, okay. Thanks.”

The first vehicle down Main Street was a police motorcycle.

Then, a Virginia Department of Transportation truck towing a big safety yellow sign: “Bicycle Race Follows.”

Then another police cycle. And another. And another.

An official Tour DuPont vehicle was next. “You’ve got about five more minutes before the racers will be here,” the driver said over a loudspeaker, “Eiyoy the race.”

Then more motorcycles, mostly BMWs ridden by Tour DuPont marshals. Then a batch of tour support vehicles, many of them Saturn
