Ethel Sanger
Mrs. Ethel Mozelle Witten Sanger, 89, died Thursday, May 6 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.
Mrs. Sanger was born Nov. 17, 190:1 in Washington County, Va.. daughter of the late James Wilkerson McKenzie Witten and Martha Harriette White.
She was the great great granddaughter of James Witten, the noted scout and spy at the time of the Revolution and the great great great granddaughter of Thomas Witten, the first permanent settler in Tazewell County, Virginia and the constructor of Fort Witten in 1778 to protect his and neighboring families from Indian attacks.
She attended Fairfax Hall, Longwood College and the.University of Virginia. She graduated from the Kings County School of Nursing in New York and worked first as a nurse-anesthetist in New York and later as a nurse on Long Island, N.Y. Washington D.C. and in Virginia.
She is survived by her husband John LeRoy Gaines of Washington, four sister and two brothers Katherine W. Harris of Richmond, Louise W. O’Neill of Alexandria, Marie W. Roll of West Islip, N.Y., A. Beverly Witten of Baltimore, Md.. J.W.M. Witten. Jr. of Brandy Station and Henry C. Witten of Richmond.
She also leaves three nephews, eight nieces, nine great nephews, 10 great nieces and one great great nephew.
Funeral services were conducted Monday. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery, Washington.
Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton was in charge of the arrangements.
