property it was really on,” Col. Kneupfer said. “We went over to the office behind the treasurer and looked at plats. It was definitely on the Singleton property,” he said. He added that there were photographs taken of the site.
However, he said, the Castleton dump site is far from an isolated problem. “This is a small damp spot in a whole ocean of problems of this type.” he said. He added that removal of the material was held up because of the ongoing investigation into possible criminal acts.
He said Special Agent Jeff Parsons of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations in Culpeper was in charge of the investigation. Special Agent Parsons said the investigation had been turned over to the EPA and he could not comment on the case.
Col. Kneupfer said he had recently been advised by the EPA that a cleanup is scheduled for next Monday or Tuesday.
Col. Kneupfer said the barrels seemed to contain a variety of substances, “some identified,” including malathion, paint and paint base.
