Rappahannock New* Staff Writer * Coach Gary Leake is looking for quality, not quantity, in his basketball teams this year. , He feels that it is more important that players have a good current standing in their classes and behave in the classroom, and team members were chosen for these qualities as well as for their athletic abilities. “If someone will not work hard in the classroom, they will probably not work hard on the court,” said Leake.
Gary Leake is coaching both the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams this season. Practice sessions are set for every day of the week except Sunday, and last about one and half hours.
The roster for the junior varsity team includes sophomores Jason Carter, Willie Eastham, Lee Freeman, Mark Jenkins, Stephen Mills, William Shanks, Mike Wolfe, and ninth graders Jeff Atkins, Jon Butler, Tim Compton, Jon Digges, James Jenkins, Chris McLear, and Eric Smith.
Varsity players are seniors Carlos Avelar, Jonathan Fletcher, Jon Pierce, J.C. Welch, juniors Ray Atkins, Paul Brown, Derek Daczewitz, Andre Fletcher, Jeff Holder, David Pierce, Jason Settle, and sophomore Jason Brown.
The team manager is Mike Wharton.
- “The players have been working extremely hard. Both teams have .their offensive plays down already. They are picking things up quickly,” said Leake. “We have been focusing more on the fundamentals this year to create more scoring opportunities,” he added.
The first game of the season will be at Brentsville Friday, Dec. 10.
