Virginia Attorney General Stephen Rosenthal recommended last week that the State Corporation Commission turn down most of Potomac Edison’s requested rate increase.
The power company, which serves most of Rappahannock County, had requested a $9.9 million annual rate increase. Mr. Rosenthal recommended that the SCC deny $8 million of that.
According to information supplied by the Attorney General’s office the rate increase would amount to an increase of 10.6 percent for the average residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month.
The higher rates actually took effect September 28, but customers will receive a deduction from future bills if the SCC decides that the increase is excessive.
