Road Names
To the Editor:
Let me add my voice to that of Bob Dennis concerning the naming of state Route 627. I would very much prefer, if the road must be named, it be given a more historically correct name of Shiloh Road from Route 522 to the point where it makes a sharp right in a southerly direction. It then becomes the Poe’s Road, which at one time ran all the way to Route 622 along what is now Richard and Esther Settle’s property.
This is stated rather clearly in the deed to our farm from Mr. John S. Browing to myself and my then husband Edward Harris. The name Jerico, not Jericho as I first thought, was a name this section had for only a short while when it was so named by the owners of property on the comer of 647 and 637, and became a popular name but not really a part of a much larger history.
Truth to tell, I am against naming the roads at all. State Route 637 in large number is a perfectly adequate identification. If the county will be covered with road signs and landowners with 2 or more houses on their property are required to name the lanes, can’t you see it now, “Old Farm Way; Crabapple Trail; Strawberry Lane?” How many surburan
