Dennis Store in Scrabble is a tiny building at the junction of routes 626 and 680.
It is a family run business, begun by Clifford R. Dennis 70 years ago. His son Robert Dennis, Sr. and his wife Doris have run the store half of

that time, since 1960. Robert Dennis is a native of Rappahannock County, and his wife was raised in Culpeper.
Mr. Dennis said that back in the days when his father ran the store, a part of the store was designated “The Ware Room,” where locals could purchase hog food, chicken food and other farm supplies. People brought in chickens and eggs to trade for other goods. Mr. Dennis said, “If I wasn’t here in the store I was in the fields, or taking care of the cows, horses, pigs and chickens.”
There also used to be a chicken house on the back of the store, but that area is now for storage. The store is more modernized now, with 120 videos for rent for $2 a night, a kerosene heater instead of a woodstove, and a large selection of soda
