“Discover Nutrition...Anytime, Anywhere” is the theme for*1995. March is Nutrition Month. It is also a good time to evaluate your family’s diet to be sure everyone is eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day or “Five A Day.”

The dietary guidelines established for Americans recommend that we need three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit each day. For most of us, we can say that we need at least “Five a day” total servings of fruits and vegetables for good health.

This emphasis on fruits and vegetables is being done because evidence shows that the nutrients and fiber in fruits and vegetables may help reduce our risk for heart diseases and cancer. Thirty-five percent of all cancer deaths can be attributed to the typical American diet which is too high in fats and too low in fiber. So it makes sense that we should do something to help ourselves by adjusting our meals to include more fruits and vegetables Cor good health through our eating habits.

The federal government has approved three health claims dealing with cancer prevention: a low fat diet may reduce your risk for cancer; high fiber foods may reduce your risk for cancer; fruits and vegetables may reduce your risk for cancer. You can expect to see these health claims on food packages.
