The high school winter sports season came to an end last Tuesday, when the boys' varsity basketball team lost in a blow- out to Central in the first round of the Bull Run District Tournament.

Central prevailed 80 to 53. They scored many three-pointers and out rebounded the Panther squad.

Rappahannock trailed 14 to 10 at the end of the first quarter, and Central never subsequently had serious trouble. They took a 34 to 25 lead into the half, and increased the lead to 61 to 33 at the end of the third quarter.

Willie Eastham led in rebounds, while Jason Settle led in points with 10 and Andre Fletcher had 9.

Jeff' Atkins, up from the JV squad, got into the game in the final minute and scored two three pointers and a foul shot.

The team came into the tournament ranked seventh in the nine-team district with a record of six wins and ,15 losses overall, four wins and 12 losses in district play.

They played Central almost even in a game at Central near the end of the season, and Coach Baltimore felt his team had a chance if they could handle the pressure and make good decisions. He was disappointed with the effort the team put in the tournament game.

The junior varsity boys’ basketball team finished with a record of 10 wins and eight losses overall, eight and eight in district play. It ended ranked in the middle of the district, but only the top two teams advance in JV.

The volleyball teams finished their play without advancing to tournaments. The varsity ended with four wins and 16 losses overall, three and 13 in district play. The JV ended with six wins and 10 losses.

Varsity Coach Laura Conklin said, “I think we had a pretty good season overall. 1 saw a lot of improvement. There were times I saw them play that I feel we could have beat "anyone in the district.”
