Rep. Frank Wolf (R-lOth District) praised the decision of the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board not to build Corridor H in Virginia.
At a meeting last month the board voted unanimously not to build the road, which would have followed Route 55 from Elkins, W.Va. to Interstate 81 near Strasburg.
Following that decision Rep. Wolf said, “Today’s decision by the CTB puts an end to Corridor FI in Virginia and an end to the fears of many that their homes, and way of life, would be threatened by the construction of Corridor H.”
The estimated cost of completing the Virginia part of the roadway with 14.4 miles of new four-lane road had been as high as $ 1.1 billion.
The transportation board also rejected a two-lane proposal called the Improved Roadway Alternative. Rep. Wolf opposed the building of both Corridor H and the IRA.
“Corridor FI would have meant the destruction of scores of homes and businesses, but even the Improved Roadway Alternative in Virginia still would have relocated 23 homes and two businesses, increased traffic and congestion...” he said.
In public hearings held in Virginia on Corridor H, 83 percent of respondents supported the No Build option, 12 percent supported the fourlane Corridor H, and only 5 percent supported the IRA option.
