New member Joy Sloane objected to the policy of having a staff person always working with volunteers, saying it could make the volunteers “feel useless.’’
Member John Hartline, who works as a volunteer at the library desk, said in the afternoons the library can become so busy one volunteer can’t keep up with all that is needed at the desk.
Mrs. Anderson said she hopes the extra hours will eventually mean the library is open more on weekends.
A separate vote on the salary line item passed 6 to 0 with Mrs. Sloane abstaining’.
Vice chairman Frank Warner made the motion to approve the salary line item, noting it had the support of the library director and executive committee.
Other line items in the budget produced little debate. Mrs. Holmes said most were based on doubling income or expenses from the first six months of this year.
Mrs. Jamieson said she would develop an index to the board's policies.
